Strong commitment is addressed, as well as to educational activities, to the development of research projects carried out in collaboration with important local companies, as well as initiatives to strengthen and expand the network of relationships with companies in the organization of internships, orientation activities, testimonies and seminars, workshops, study visits. The network has also become significant internationally, giving rise to interesting experiences of internships abroad.
Progetto ELB (End Life Boat)
The goal of the research is to study and propose a sustainable solution to offer a proper end of life to craft, demonstrating, both theoretically and experimentally, the opportunity to enter the “boat system” within the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) , with particular attention to the last phase of the cycle: the divestment. The project, which aims to identify an economic process for the ecological recovery of the hulls of boats in glass-resin, and was developed as part of a PhD funded by the Municipality of La Spezia, has found more energy through an agreement concluded with EULABOR and Viareggio Super Yachts. The preliminary tests carried out at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa, they formed the basis for the design of a first reactor (technology demonstrator) can transform the glass-resin coming from the demolition of liquid fuels in boats and gaseous fuels and materials in the first to second.
Progetto MINITRANSAT 2015

Progetto E-NAVIGO MED (ex Seabus)
Seabus is a maritime transport system for passengers who intend to enter in the urban public transport of the city in order to lighten, significantly, the wheels one reducing transit time, cost and environmental pollution (reduction of emissions of air pollutants and noise radiated into the environment). The Seabus project has the dual purpose of providing a significant contribution to the movement of passengers from maritime municipalities of the provinces when traveling to the capital for business reasons, but also to provide a system that helps to highlight the tourism sector bringing visitors in most areas attraction. The Seabus system is formed by a fleet of highly automated naval means (almost of surface robot with a minimum crew that oversees the operation of the medium), a control system, Control, Communications, Computing (C4), and a Terminal system intelligent that, in addition to managing passenger traffic connects it with the land transport system. Seabus is also proposed as a means to intercept a part of the tourist traffic brought by the big cruise ships, which have made Spezia their point of reference. The technologies involved in the development of the project are from engineering shipbuilding, electronics, ICT, electrical engineering and advanced logistics. Also important are: the studies for the insertion of the Seabus within the city transportation system, the design studies the means and the terminal and ergonomic studies oriented to make the Seabus a totally innovative system that is not only a means of handling of people, but also a place of socialization, discussion, work and play. Seabus is proposed for the city of La Spezia in the project Smart City – La Spezia 20-20, but has the ambition to be proposed for all cities that have access to the bays, lagoons, ports or networks of channels that can be used for navigation. At present the preliminary design has been applied in 22 different versions, of which 8 are aimed at the city of La Spezia with paths of media covering the countries of the Gulf to the Five Lands coastline.
Safety is an essential requirement for all those computer systems that influence and direct our daily lives because they control the car traffic, railway and plane, our electronic payments and non-medical devices in hospitals, etc .. The task of security is precisely to prevent a computer system is controlled by those who want to exploit to damage other institutions or other people. Evaluate the security of a computer system is still a problem of difficult solution, and thus it is possible to know whether a system can be attacked only when you start using it. This is due to the complexity of the systems and their rapid technological evolution that prevent you from using the well-established approaches in other fields that are based, for example, related to failures or malfunctions statistics.
A possible solution.
To face this problem a joint research team led by Fabrizio Baiardi professor, Computer Science Department, University of Pisa and the engineering Marcello Montecucco of the University Campus of La Spezia, has developed “Haruspex” a computerized tool to evaluate the security of a system at the stage of its design. Starting from a description of the computer system and of those who is interested to attack, Haruspex simulates, and reproduces the behavior of the system and connections for a long time interval and discovers any such attacks have happened in this interval. The simulations are repeated several times in order to discover all attacks that may have happened. Considering much longer times you can also discover the “blacks swans”, in other words, those unlikely situations, but with catastrophic effects. Once discovered attacks that are successful, you change the system and applies again Haruspex evaluating improvements. This is an innovative solution for computer security and has strict mathematical basis because it is inspired by the Monte Carlo method developed in the 40s by the Manhattan project. To understand Haruspex, we think of a card game with rules so complicated that it is almost impossible to find a formula to calculate the probability that a player has in hand some cards. But if we reproduce the game on a computer, we can play many computer games and see how many times the player has cards that interest us. Obviously the time to play the games depends on how complicated are the rules of the game and how much faster the computer is. In computer security, every game corresponds to an attack and the game is so complex that only an extremely fast computer can play the games required to assess, within a reasonable time, the safety of a complex computer system.
A supercomputing system (the subject of a donation from IBM Corporation as the winner of an international competition held by the company itself), of a new architecture, modular and easily expandable to ensure the processing speed required for simulations Haruspex, it is operating at Promostudi – University Campus of La Spezia.
In addition to applications in the civilian sector, Haruspex has been field-tested in two major NATO exercises Cyber Security (Locked Locked Shields Shields 2014 and 2015) receiving significant appreciations and contributing significantly to the good results of the Italian defense team. On 4 and 5 June 2015 Rome- Palazzo Altieri, ABI has invited the leaders of Haruspex project to present it in the area of the Banks and Security 2015 conference.
Project for recycling purposes and teaching of a submarine
La Spezia, the cradle of Italian submarines buildings, and still home to the only national establishment specialized in the production of submarines (the shipyard of Fincantieri Muggiano), has not been able to achieve the goal of having a boat to be used for purposes museum as it was done in the cities of Milan, Venice and Genoa.
Despite numerous attempts made by the Associations of La Spezia’s Arma, and in particular by ANMI, each project has foundered on the rocks because of: economic difficulties, the unit’s location and management of an enterprise of considerable complexity.
To investigate the issue and evaluate its feasibility, it has proposed the University Center of La Spezia that, with the financial support of the Municipality of La Spezia, is developing a master plan in which the interventions to be carried out on the boat, its inclusion in the context city museum and the technical and economic issues will be properly investigated.
The study, which identified the submarine Leonardo Da Vinci as the most suitable unit for the purpose, is carried out as part of a degree dissertation of the master’s course in Yacht Design by the student Priscilla Bertelli.
The constraints imposed at the study were both in the matter of a placement on land of the submarine part of the Naval Technical Museum and to make the unit visitable also by people with disabilities. A further constraint has been placed with the aim that the unit is preserved as much as possible with all facilities and quirkily. In this way, the boat can also carry out educational functions for students of the University Center Marconi overlooking the marine engineering studies with specialization in military shipbuilding.
The location of the submarine in the naval museum has been designed in collaboration with Studio Rich Blacks & Associates Architects which already deals with the restructuring of the museum.
Along almost 64 meters high as a 4-story building, with a weight of more than 1,400 tons, placing on the ground of this unity is also a highly respected engineering challenge, whose phases will be followed step by step by the University Campus of La Spezia students.
Promostudi La Spezia follows and supports students of Polo Marconi also in some extra educational activities, with particular reference to sports activities related to the sea.
After a first experience with participation in the waterbike regatta 2006 (student’s racing boats on pedal boats – development gym alternative propulsion), from 2008, the University Campus of La Spezia students participate in the 1001VelaCup races at the end of the academic year (inter-university racing boats reserved to ski entirely designed and built, and led in the race, from college students) in which they have received numerous awards and recognitions. Every year, moreover, a crew of students participate in the CSSN Trophy as part of Mariperman Trophy event.
Following the experience gained from the research project related to the preparation of the prototype, in 2016 the Mini 756 Promostudi La Spezia, by skipper Alberto Bona, has been sailing in Les Sables – Azores.
Hands, composed of the University Center Spezia students also took part in the 151 miles-and Giraglia Rolex Cup races.
